We have studied the development of bimodal bilingualism in children ages 1-7 who are learning a signed and a spoken language at the same time. The two primary groups involved are KODAs (hearing children of deaf parents) and deaf children with cochlear implants who are exposed to both signed and spoken languages.
Hearing children of Deaf families (KODAs) acquire both a sign language and a spoken language simultaneously. This project investigated the sequence and timecourse of the development of these two languages, and compared this process with what was already known about the development of two spoken languages. The development of the bimodal bilingual’s two languages was also compared with the monolingual development of a spoken language or a sign language.
This project also included the investigation of Deaf children who are acquiring sign language and also are learning a spoken language with the aid of a cochlear implant. The process of acquiring two languages for these children was compared with the experiences of kodas to seek similarities and differences for these two groups of participants. We sincerely thank the Deaf and hearing consultants, research assistants, children, and their families who work with us in our research.
This project was a collaboration between Deborah Chen Pichler (Gallaudet University), Diane Lillo-Martin (University of Connecticut), and Ronice Müller de Quadros (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina).
Longitudinal Studies
Children between the ages of 1 and 3 progress through the earliest stages of language learning, from babbling to first words to first sentences. Bilingual children proceed through these stages in each of their languages in many ways similar to monolingual children, with some important differences. Bimodal bilingual children also make their way through each of these stages in the sign and speech modalities, but we still know relatively little about what this progress looks like.
In our development studies, we videotaped bimodal bilingual children interacting with their caregivers and others in their familiar home environment, approximately once a week for one hour each time. This very valuable longitudinal research helps us understand the earliest stages of bilingual bimodal language development.
Language Fairs
Children ages 4-7 are rapidly developing their linguistic skills, and bilingual bimodal children in these ages are on their way to acquiring an adult-like grasp of both a signed and spoken language. Because these children are able to attend to activities for longer periods of time, we usually investigate their language development through experiments set up as games.
For this project, we held “Language Fairs” for bimodal bilingual children and their families to participate for a few hours in many of our experiments at one time. We have held ASL and English fairs at Gallaudet University, in Connecticut, and in New York.
